200 protesters at the Feria de Nîmes
200 anti-bullfighting protesters mobilized in front of the Nîmes arena shortly before the start of the bullfight, at 6pm, Saturday, May 19, 2018. Despite altercations with the police, the bullfighting was not disturbed.
Armed with signs, they chanted slogans. “We can not stand to torture an animal to death for a quarter of an hour in an arena, in a country that claims to be civilised,” said one of the demonstrators, and added “when a tradition is cruel, it must be abolished!”
While attempting to enter the arena enclosure, some activists pushed police officers to the ground. The police intervened using tear gas.
Five activists were arrested and placed in police custody. Around 8pm, while a heavy rain fell on Nîmes, the militants dispersed gradually.
