Air pollution alert as heatwave continues
Several areas in the South have been placed on alert for pollution.
Haute-Garonne, Gard and Hérault were placed on alert on Thursday, with pollution levels particularly bad in the Gard.
The Var and Bouches-du-Rhone were also placed on alert, and in some departments speed limits have been lowered by 20km/h to combat the problem.
The authorities have advised “postponing travel”, walking or cycling instead of using vehicles, or car sharing.
ATMO Grand Est, an organisation responsible for monitoring air quality, said that it was a result of the hot weather that the pollution levels have risen.
