Auction to renovate the école des beaux arts in Sète

France 3/Scoop, Oct 28

An unprecedented auction took place at the Molière theatre in Sète on Saturday.

116 artists donated their works to renovate the school of Fine Arts in the city. Among them, great names of figurative painting who studied there. A sum of 175,000€ was raised.

Glen Baxter, Hervé Di Rosa and Robert Combas, all these renowned artists wanted to participate in this event of solidarity.

A painting of Robert Combas, a “Venus” in black and white, fetched 40,000€.

Perched on the heights of Sète, the School of Fine Arts dates from the 19th century. The old building and its gardens need to be renovated. The proceeds from the auction will be added to the 1.3 million euros invested by the town hall.

For the artists who studied there, this solidarity effort was a no-brainer. “I feel we have a fidelity to the place, as if we were a little indebted to the energy that the school generates,” said Armelle Caron, donor, painter and professor of drawing.

Work will begin in 2019.
