Carole Delga announces the building of new prison

The president of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga, has confirmed the construction of a new prison in Alès in the Gard.

She tweeted the news on Tuesday.

This new facility will accommodate approximately 450 inmates. The location chosen has not yet been released.

This construction is part of the plan to combat prison overcrowding. Two sites are envisaged in the Gard: one in Nîmes, which is the most overpopulated in France, and one in Alès.

An additional prison will be built in Perpignan during 2021-2023.
