CCTV cameras to double in Béziers

France 3/Scoop, Feb 1

The number of CCTV cameras in use in Béziers is going to double in two years, according to a press release by Béziers mayor Robert Ménard.

There are 90 in place now, and by the end of 2020 there will be 200.

Robert Ménard issued a very clear message on Facebook, “I say to all you rascals who want to menace the population of Béziers, times have changed, and 2019 will not be a good year for you.”

The aim is to extend the network outside the city centre. From the first quarter of 2019, 30 cameras in underground car parks of the city will be connected to the municipal police. An effective method according to the mayor of Béziers, who said in his statement that delinquency has dropped another 14% in 2018.

Aimé Couquet, PCF municipal councillor from Béziers, reacted on social networks by saying “Once again, Robert Ménard wants recognition and raises controversy. (...) After having armed and doubled the staff of the municipal police, added cameras in the streets, is there still delinquency? This must be an admission of his impotence or incompetence.”
