Couple who dragged a dog behind their car fined
A couple from Montauban have been fined this week for killing their own dog. It seems they got off lightly.
The incident happened last February when they were heading to a birthday party. They got in the car, under the influence of alcohol, and didn’t notice that the dog hadn’t got into the car with them. The lead was trapped in the door. They set off and drove (yes, under the influence) 25 kilometres between Grisolles and Montauban. The unfortunate dog was dragged all the way, and didn’t survive.
Another motorist flagged the car down to let the owners know what had happened. It was then that they made the decision to throw the dead dog into the Tarn river.
According to the defendants, it is a “tragic combination of circumstances, against a backdrop of alcohol, that led to this ‘accident.’”
The corpse of the dog was later found by a hiker, and the vet didn’t have any trouble identifying the owners of the microchipped dog.
The owner of the dog has been fined €500, and his ex-companion €100.
Animal rights protesters made a lot of noise during the trial, but it didn’t prevent the owner from getting off lightly for allegedly drunk driving, accidentally killing a dog, and then ditching him in the river.
