Deaf people demonstrate in Perpignan

France 3/Scoop, Sep 30

On Saturday, the occasion of the World Day for the Deaf, nearly 300 people gathered in Perpignan to march to the town hall.

The handicap of being deaf is often ignored, especially when it comes to finding a job. "We are very angry because there is 60 to 70% unemployment in the deaf community, depending on the region," said Guy Maucurier of the association of the deaf.

In school too, it is often difficult to follow courses without sign language. Only Toulouse, Lyon and Paris offer specialised establishments.

“It is discrimination, deaf children must work ten times more than their peers," said Delphine Lebot, president of the association of parents of the deaf.

In the Occitanie region, it is estimated that there are 30,000 deaf and hard of hearing people.
