Drowning during a canoe trip

France 3/Scoop, Jul 1

A mother and her 10 year old son were in a canoe on the Aude, near Limoux, together with her husband and daughter in another canoe.

The woman’s boat turned over, tipping them both out. The currents in the water were strong, and they were both swept along the river at an alarming rate. The son was found by firefighters safe and sound on a rock, but the mother unfortunately did not survive.

Kayaking in Occitanie rivers is very popular during the summer. If you are interested in canoeing, make sure that you don the helmets and life-jackets. Many of the hire places don’t insist on helmets and jackets for adults, despite the obvious risks. Even if you are an experienced canoeist, please follow safety rules, and encourage others too.
