Drunkard panics residents with a Kalashnikov

France 3/Scoop, Jul 31

A holiday maker spotted a very drunk shirtless man in the centre of Perpignan at 3am in the morning. The drunkard had a bloody face, and he was brandishing a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

The armed man was walking purposefully towards the Place des Poilus in the city centre of Perpignan.

The holiday maker hid, and quickly called the police.

The police arrived at the scene, fearing the worst. The armed man was spotted in rue des Augustins, where the police managed to catch him and disarm him. He was placed in custody.

The weapon turned out to be a very good replica made of plastic.

The arrested man couldn’t be interviewed until the beginning of the afternoon because he was so drunk. The 32-year-old truck driver, totally unknown to the police, acknowledged the facts and was apologetic, saying he was under the influence of alcohol and he was attempting to intimidate a group of people with whom he had had an altercation earlier in the evening.

The man is due in court in October.
