Farmers join Gilets Jaunes on Saturday
Late on Friday night news emerged that farmers across Occitanie had decided to operate their own demonstrations this weekend in a response to what the newspapers have described as "agri-bashing".
Their main thrust appears to be to disrupt traffic across the region by using their tractors as "escargots" - literally, snails - to slow traffic. This kind of action is completely legal and highly effective in bringing roads to a stand-still.
Meanwhile, preparations for what the Gilets Jaunes describe as "Act 5" are in full flow across Occitanie too. A brief run-round the various local and regional Facebook pages and protestors' blog-sites shows that many thousands of protestors are planning lightning strikes in Béziers, Montpellier, Pérols, Lunel - and elsewhere.
One blog already boasts of the empty shelves in Auchan, the product of blockades at distribution depots and stores in the region, with a tightening grip promised for Saturday.
The last 4 weekend "Acts" have shown that the level and efficiency of organisation varies widely. But, when orchestrated with any degree of co-ordination, the impact on people's ability to move around the region is severely hampered.
At best, it looks like another one of those days to come on Saturday.
