French and Spanish firefighters cooperate to better manage fires

France 3/Scoop, May 30

French and Catalan firefighters gathered in Girona on Wednesday to launch the 'Cooperem' project. A cooperation project between the two teams to be more effective against the fires that hit the French-Spanish border each year.

The main points of work are to:

Standardise practices.

Pool the resources and materials.

Train together.

Learn to communicate quickly.

The main objective is to work together to better understand a fire and to limit the damage. This cooperation is essential in this high-risk area of Catalonia, which has seen more than 500 fires in 40 years.

As a spokesperson from the project said, 'Fires have no borders.  We can spend valuable minutes passing on the authority across the border, when we could be putting out the fires!"

The Cooperem project will be fully operational by December 2020.
