Gers wine producers need more winter workers
Wine producers in the Gers are struggling to find enough workers in the winter.
The vines need care, but not only during the grape picking season. Winter is also a crucial time, but it’s a tough job in the cold.
In Bassoues, Gers, Romain Della Vedove has 4,000 vines to prune, but he can’t find a worker willing to do the job. He has had to call on his neighbour farmer, but it’s not an ideal solution, because the job has to be finished before the mild weather arrives. “If the cold weather stays, we will make it work, but if the weather improves we will need to accelerate before the vines start growing. It’s touch and go.” said Romain.
He’s not the only one in trouble. “We trained 60 job seekers,” explained Stéphane Minguet, winemaker and president of the Gascogne Employers Group. “and in the end, we will have 20% left who will carry on.“
