Gilets jaunes numbers down from last week
Act 5 of the gilets jaunes demonstrations was this weekend. In total, numbers were down by around 50%, although some serious damage was done in Occitanie, especially on the motorways.
Experts say that there is a reduced desire to take to the streets, partially due to Macron’s conciliatory speech last week, and partially because the weather is getting colder and wetter.
Andrew Smith, lecturer in French politics, told France 24 “The weather is a big point. People always talk about the fact that in Russia in 1917, one of the reasons for the Revolution was a surprisingly mild October. We’re starting to see the weather turn and people are a little bit less keen to take to the streets.”
