Journalists suspended for sexist cyberbullying

France 24, Feb 12

At least five French male journalists have now been suspended for allegedly coordinating the online harassment of others through a private Facebook group as a wave of indignation at their actions roils the country.

The closed Facebook group “League of LOL" taunted women, cracked jokes about rape and used pornographic memes to attack its victims.

Men were also sometimes targeted, but predominantly it was women colleagues.

In recent days, several people including some female journalists have publicly accused group members of having cyberbullied them. The left-wing Liberation newspaper on Monday suspended two of its journalists, including Vincent Glad, who founded the group, after its own CheckNews fact-checking unit revealed the League of LOL's existence. The affair has been dubbed the French media's #MeToo moment, referring to the worldwide movement that has seen women speak out about sexual violence and harassment.
