New A9 motorway opens!

France 3/Scoop, May 30

After 5 years of work, the brand new A9 has finally opened. As from 4:30am on Tuesday morning, cars were allowed in the direction Montpellier/Nimes. On Wednesday morning, cars travelling in a southerly direction will be allowed.

The old A9, renamed A709 is transformed into an urban road dedicated to local traffic flow. Up till now, it had to cope with 100,000 vehicles a day and up to 170,000 in the summer, causing huge traffic jams at the junctions to Montpellier.

The new A9 will be dedicated to those who want to go past Montpellier, the trucks in particular.

On the A709 the speed will be limited to 90 km/h.
