New traffic cameras to be rolled out soon

MidiLibre/Scoop, Jan 8

Montpellier is going to be one of the cities to take on the new style radars, in the fight against traffic offences. Saint-Nazaire, in the Gard, will also be installing them.

These four metre high machines will be capturing driving offences such as no seatbelts, unauthorised overtaking / undertaking, use of the phone while driving, excessive speeding, safety distances not respected, going through red lights - there’s no escape from these machines, which are capable of monitoring 30 vehicles at the same time.

Until the end of last year, these French machines were still in the test phase, notably in Lyon, Marseille and Strasbourg. According to, the government plans to install 6,000 by 2020. Some of them will be decoys, and they will be moved around.

The government intends to reduce the number of traffic accidents with these new machines, and in the process increase revenue. According to L’Indépendant, this new system could bring the state more than a billion euros in 2019.
