Occitanie artichoke harvest is 3 weeks late

France 3/Scoop, Apr 25

The Occitanie artichoke is normally the first on the French market, appreciated for its taste and its effects on health. Its sales have almost doubled in four years.

The harvest of the flagship vegetable for the region, the ‘artichoke of Roussillon’, has been delayed for three weeks due to inclement weather. A report from Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, near Barcarès confirms that producers are now very worried about the competition from Brittany. Brittany artichokes represent 80% of the production in France.

Every year between 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes are produced in Occitanie. The producers are asking consumers to buy local to save this year’s crops.
