Plane tree malady discovered in Toulouse
The malady affecting the plane trees in Occitanie, in particular along the Canal du Midi, has been discovered for the first time on two plane trees in Toulouse.
As a result, 31 magnificent old trees will be cut down in the north of the city.
The trees were diagnosed in the northern part of Avenue des Etats-Unis (at the Fondeyre industrial zone), and they were felled this week.
The town hall have dictated that 31 trees located 35 metres around the diseased trees will be felled within two months, and incinerated in compliance with the rules to prevent the spread of the fungus.
The town hall indicated that the felled trees will be replaced by new ones.
So far, the progression of the “chancre coloré “ (which first arrived in 1945 in Marseilles in ammunition boxes) had not spread further than the south of Toulouse, along the Canal du Midi. The infected trees are near the Canal Lateral, so every attempt is being made to prevent the fungus from spreading.
