Residents of Grabels fear for their health

France 3/Scoop, Apr 9

In Grabels in the Hérault, residents of the Valsière district have launched a petition to request the burial of the very high voltage line that overlooks them. Their main fear is the consequences that waves can have on the health of children.

“There is a nursery, a school, a park …”, says Soumia Messaoudi, spokesperson for the collective “les escaloltés de Valsière”. There are almost 2,000 people within 30 metres of the line.

Protesters are worried about the possible link to leukaemia in children, and exposure to the electromagnetic fields.

The scientific community remains divided as to the danger of this radiation, but researchers have noticed more stress, irritability, insomnia in some people. Several studies have associated exposure to very high-voltage lines and childhood leukemias, although a causal link could not be proved.

Faced with the risks, the inhabitants ask that the line be buried. A petition on the Internet has received nearly 400 signatures.
