Saint Gervais wind farm project mobilises opponents
The installation of wind turbines is often cause for controversy. In Saint-Gervais, a small commune near Bagnols-sur-Céze, in the Gard, residents are disputing the proposed wind farm project.
Four wind turbines may be installed on a ridge located on communal ground, above Saint-Gervais, and a further three nearby. The municipal project was voted in by a majority on December 13th.
The objective is to put Saint-Gervais on the path of energy transition, without neglecting the financial aspect. According to the mayor, the wind farm would provide financial stability to the town, for the next 30 years.
A company in Avignon, specialising in renewable energy, put together the feasibility study. If the study is to be believed, the project could supply 30,000 people with electricity.
Not everyone is in agreement though. Opponents are protesting about the lack of consultation, and the disfigurement of the landscape if it goes ahead.
Wind turbines could be installed in 2021, but opponents plan legal action to counter the project.
