Santa Maria is in Sète port for 10 days
The replica of Christopher Columbus’ ship Santa Maria arrived at Sète on Thursday, and is due to stay for 10 days.
The original ship made the legendary trip to America. It was Christopher Columbus’ flagship during his first expedition to the Americas … in 1492.
The 29 metre ship left the Spanish shipyards in March. On board there are 12 crew members including three women.
“We intend to go to the East Coast of America and Canada, but the construction was delayed, so we did not have time to cross the Atlantic during the right period” Carlos Herrera, captain of Santa Maria explained. “We now have to wait for the end of the hurricane season for the inaugural trip to America. As a result, the Mediterranean ports can enjoy the ship until November.
Santa Maria is open to visitors from 10am to 9pm at the quai Aspirant Herber until July 22.
