Search for survivors as buildings collapse
On Monday morning, two buildings collapsed in Marseille. Two people were hurt, and there’s a race against time to find anyone who might be trapped in the rubble.
One of the buildings had been condemned, but the other building next to it was occupied.
As firefighters searched through the rubble with sniffer dogs, there were fears that a third building might collapse.
The two people who were injured were in the street at the time of the collapse.
Sabine Bernasconi, the mayor for that part of Marseille, could not say for sure that squatters were not using the condemned building.
The regional prefecture urged people to avoid the area and make way for emergency services.
The apartment blocks, one five stories high, and the other six, were located on Rue d'Aubagne in the historic 1st arrondissement of the city.
