Severe thunderstorms cause significant damage

La Dépêche/Scoop, Jun 10

On the night of Saturday to Sunday violent storms fell on the Gers, accompanied by heavy rains and hail. The leisure centre at Saint-Clar had to be completely evacuated. A hundred people were moved.

France-Météo had placed the Gers and Hautes-Pyrénées on orange alert for storms on Saturday night.

On Sunday around 1am, a hundred people were gathered in a leisure centre for a wedding, and a mudslide hit the site. Vehicles were trapped, and the party-goers had to wait until 5am for firefighters to clear the site and evacuate them. No injuries were reported.

50 km away, in Samatan, many trees were blown down by the force of the bad weather. The department’s firefighters were busy for most of the night, clearing up the damage on the roads.

The Lot was also affected by the violent weather episode, and firefighters were pumping out water from several cellars.

France-Météo ended that particular alert at 4 o’clock on Sunday morning.
