Sharp increase of drownings in private pools

France 3/Scoop, Jul 30

A few years ago, most occurrences of drowning happened in the sea or rivers, but this year there has been a sharp rise in drownings in swimming pools, mostly private. Pool accidents only accounted for 10% of drownings in 2017, but this year already, 27% of drownings have happened in private pools.

This weekend 43-year-old man died in a private pool in Soubès, Hérault. Firefighters from Lodève and the doctor who arrived in a Dragon 34 could not revive him.

On Sunday a 5-year-old child was hospitalised in serious condition after an accident in a private pool in Portiragnes-Plage. The child was of Russian origin, staying in a holiday villa. He was transported by a Dragon 34 helicopter to Montpellier University Hospital.

An 18-month-old baby was hospitalised after partially drowning on a Palavas beach on Sunday. The accident happened on Prévost beach, where luckily there was an emergency doctor who was on vacation. He rushed to the scene of the accident, and resuscitated the child.

The young victim was transported by a Dragon 34 helicopter to the ERU Lapeyronie Hospital in Montpellier.
