Jane said this about her exhibition:
‘Street’ for me is about dreams.
When I was a child I was presented with a lovingly home made skate board. The wheels were salvaged from an old pair of roller skates and the platform cut from a chunky, heavy lump of hard-board. Unfortunately ergonomics had swiftly passed it by.
Made with the best of intentions, resulting in the worst results. It soon became a representation of my klutzy under achievements . I have always loved music and movement so later in my life, as a young woman, I sought out modern dance classes. I soon found there was no place for me as I had no former training.
Just because our dreams cannot always be achieved doesn’t mean we have to stop dreaming. Now I can celebrate my appreciation of these unresolved skills through painting.
One may expect these street arts to be better represented through more appropriate techniques such as spray paint, stencilling etc… However I decided to represent my subjects with a paint brush. I wanted to give these characters a more considered and ‘precious’ approach. Something one may reserve for jewellery design or botanical illustration. This is of course a contradiction with the vernacular language of these themes. As I have said they represent my dreams and in that they are truly precious.
