Terror attack in Nîmes thwarted by bystanders
A man shouting Allah Akbar drove towards a busy bar in Nîmes in the small hours of Friday morning. A crowd of 50 people were outside the bar L’Instant T on rue Racine.
The man was reported to have driven the car at speed towards the crowd at 1am, but the barriers prevented the driver from accessing most of the bystanders. Witnesses said that the man then tried to flee, but several bystanders managed to hold him down until the police arrived to arrest him at 1:30am.
The 32 year old suspect is believed to be a local, and was driving a white Peugeot when he hit the barriers set up for the Feria de Nîmes festival this weekend.
Two people were hurt, but they are not life-threatening injuries.
The attacker is believed to be in a “state of mental confusion” and has been hospitalised under police guard.
