The CRAC in Sète presents The Crossing, a monographic exhibition by Johan Creten and Athanor, a small alchemical sequence a collective exhibition of the Académinérale du Musée de l’Invisible.
Following on from his artistic residence in Sète in 1991, Johan Creten showed the works executed during his sojourn in a permanent exhibition in the “quarantine” of the port of Sète. In order to discover his series of sculptures there is only one way of getting there: a crossing by boat. 25 years later The Crossing takes on an even greater symbolism increased by changes in the world. Changes which can also be perceived in the work of the artist who has since travelled the world. The CRAC project proposes an initiatory journey through works that illustrate the mystery of nature in which flowers and seaweed are confronted by a strange and fascinating bestiary. Exceptional ceramics are on display – some executed by the National Factory of Sèvres – and monumental bronzes.
The exhibition of the Académinérale du Musée de l’Invisible Athanor, small alchemical sequence is conceived around the motif and the symbolism of the Athanor, the famous crucible of the alchemist. It revisits the lived-through and mythical dimensions linked with stone and minerals through the poetics of alchemy. An area which curiously is of great interest to a growing number of modern artists.
