The ski season is properly underway!
The snow finally arrived in the Pyrenees, and the ski season is launched. Almost all stations are already open and the few areas still closed should soon be accessible, probably by Saturday this week.
Heavy snowfall is expected until Thursday: a challenge for ski resorts that will have to organise safe access.
In less than 48 hours, there will have been between one and two metres of snow fallen.
At the beginning of January, half of the Pyrenean ski stations had to close, for lack of snow. The snow level had reached its lowest level in 22 years.
The Pyrenean massif represents about 10% of the ski market share in France, one of the largest in the world with the United States and Austria. It mainly attracts a regional or Spanish clientele. The snow depth in the Pyrenees could decrease by half and average maximum temperatures increase from 1.4 to 3.3 degrees by 2050, according to the Pyrenees Observatory of Climate Change (OPCC).
