Toulouse introduces registration numbers for bicycles
Every day in France, more than a thousand bikes are stolen. To put an end to this phenomenon, the government are to impose a unique identification number on new bicycles. The number will be engraved on the bike. A national database will be created, which the police will use to search for stolen bikes.
In Toulouse, bike associations already offer a similar system. For 10 euros, the maison du vélo de Toulouse engraves the frame and registers it in their database, which currently has more than 300,000 registered bikes.
