Clos de la Barthassade, 2017 les Cargadous – 19€
This is a new estate, with a first vintage in 2014, and eleven hectares of vineyards around Aniane, that are farmed biodynamically.
Les Cargadous is yet another example of how white wine is apace improving in the Languedoc. It is a lovely blend of Chenin Blanc, a grape variety more commonly found in the Loire Valley, and Roussanne, that is usually grown in the northern Rhône.
The wine was fermented and aged in small barrels and also 500 litre barrels, but none new, for 18 months, and the oak is very well-integrated, enhancing the texture on the palate. And there are flavours of fresh lemony fruit, balanced by honey. It is wonderfully original.
