Cruising down the Canal du Midi

A couple of weeks ago I was invited aboard La Capitane for a truly enjoyable evening of music, tapas, wine tasting, and even dancing on the way back.

La Capitane is a wooden replica of an ancient Gabarre, a flat bottom transport barge, The boat was built to be one of the stars in the film “La Rivière Espérance” in 1995 and now is docked in La Somail.

We traveled on this lovely boat from Le Somail to Sallèles and had a magical stop at the Maison de l‘Ecurie restaurant for tasty tapas and a wine tasting with a local vigneron.

Turns out it was the perfect thing to do and the best way to enjoy the canal. It is a totally different experience to see the canal from a boat than it is seeing it driving past.

We all know that the canal is a World Heritage protected site and we all know the remarkable engineering history of Paul Riquet, but how often do you get to really enjoy an evening boat ride on the canal with your family/ friends?

There are a variety of ways to take advantage of this entertaining evening voyage. You can rent the boat entirely for a wedding reception, birthday or anniversary party or “any excuse for a party” party.

You can also join a cruise on a set evening. There is one coming up on the 6th of July and one set evening per week either Thursday or Friday evening for the rest of the season.

The boat can hold up to 50 people on board. The evening includes live music, we had a lively fun accordion player who got everyone up dancing. There is a mid cruise stop at the Maison de l’Ecurie restaurant for tapas including a café gourmand and a wine tasting, and you also have the chance to buy a bottle or a case of wine from a local winery giving the degustation.
