EU anti-fraud office seizes 400 tons of shampoo

€5 million worth of Dove, Head & Shoulders and Pantene was on its way to France and Spain from China via Latin America, says OLAF.

The EU’s anti-fraud office (OLAF) helped seize nearly €5 million worth of counterfeit shampoo in Colombia and Mexico that was likely headed to Europe, the agency said.

Working with Spanish customs as well as Colombian and Mexican authorities, OLAF said 400 tons of fake shampoo produced in China had made their way across the globe, being loaded and unloaded from different vessels in a number of ports. Colombian customs said the shampoo included the Dove, Head & Shoulders and Pantene brands.

“Based on previous case experience and market information, OLAF suspected these shipments could have been aimed at the EU,” an OLAF spokesperson said. Investigators said the containers were stopped in Colombia because there was a high risk authorities would lose track of their whereabouts had they travelled on any further.

The bust follows a similar operation last year in which OLAF seized 360 tons of illegal or counterfeit pesticides mainly coming from China to the EU.
