The first snowflakes fell on Mount Aigoual in the Gard yesterday.  It’s looking good for ski-lovers, with only a few weeks to go before the opening of the first ski resorts from 30 November.

A white blanket covered the peaks of Mount Aigoual on Wednesday, and the Prat Peyrot ski resort is due to open on 15 December, two months earlier than last year.

Lately, the opening of this station is more and more random because of the lack of snow, but this year the owners of the ski resort are hopeful that it will be an early season.  They have also invested in better snow cannons, to boost the slopes.

On the side of the Pyrénées-Orientales, the first snow fell in early September. Some stations such as Font-Romeu and Les Angles have set their opening dates as 30 November, then Cambre d’Aze and Bloquère on 6 December and Porte Puymorens on 14 December.

The Puyvalador station should open at the end of November. It has been closed for two years because of serious financial difficulties, but it was since taken over by an investor from Carcassonne.
