Huge explosion heard in Montpellier, don’t panic say authorities

A huge explosion was heard in Montpellier and neighbouring communities this Wednesday, at 3:30pm.

A wave of panic hit social media, and the the Prefecture was obliged to make an announcement that the sound was probably the noise of a fighter plane hitting the sound barrier.  The plane would have reached a speed at least equal to that of the speed of sound in the air, or 340 meters per second, or 1,224 km / h or Mach 1, and caused a shock wave in the form of supersonic blast.

Three days after the earthquake near Montélimar, the noise sent a tremor of fear through Montpellier residents.
