Cartoon by Martin Rowson, The Guardian

The Britain that was
is a carcass, being
picked clean.

By all those who see
only their little piece.
Their gilded settlement.

No love of a shared
past. Careless of a
national future.

Enraged by desire
and fear. Brainless
and isolated, lost

as each argument
is lost. An endless
funeral of projection.

An island made blind
by the earth’s curve,
deafened by technology.

Dumbed by greed and
stupefied by marketing.
Adrift, becalmed, helpless.
