The Montpellier Association 1 million d’arbres has been paid a tribute by the environment minister Elisabeth Borne. She planted a tree in the garden of her ministry to salute the work of the Montpellier association.
The association, created in 2017 and chaired by Jean-Paul Wabotaï, intends to raise awareness of the preservation of the environment against climate change. Its goal is to plant a million trees in France by 2020.
Without any formal government subsidies, the association has already planted more than 10,000 trees. In addition to this, an individual from Murviel-lès-Montpellier has bought arable land with the idea of planting no less than 100,000 trees.
Jean-Paul Wabotaï’s wish is that Emmanuel Macron decrees a national day of planting trees.
Several cities have already declared themselves in favour of the initiative: Montpellier, of course, the first to have supported the association, but also Toulouse, Pérols, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone and Nice.
