Notre-Dame cathedral on fire

A fire broke out at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.  A spokesperson has said that the fire could possibly be linked to restoration work which is currently being carried out.

A major operation was under way to tackle the blaze, which broke out on Monday afternoon, and an area surrounding the building in central Paris has been cleared, officials said.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo asked people to keep their distance while firefighters battle the fire.

The spire and roof were destroyed, but the main building may have been saved according to firefighters at the scene.

Emotional scenes were recorded around  the world as people mourned the destruction of an 850 year old landmark.

Updated…A spokesperson has confirmed that the fire is now completely extinguished.
