A prisoner escaped during a comfort break stop during a transfer between the Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone prison and and Alès courthouse.
Police want to know if anyone has seen him.
The 35-year-old prisoner escaped south of Ledignan in the Gard, during his transfer.
Helicopters and search teams have been scouring the region since his escape at around 10am on Thursday.
The defendant was on his way to the Ales courthouse for a series of burglaries, when he made a dash for freedom. The three guards could not catch him, and he disappeared into the countryside. [Really, the guards couldn’t catch a handcuffed man? Ed.] He is wearing a black tracksuit with orange stripes, and is likely to still be handcuffed.
According to the Directorate of Prison Administration (DAP), the prisoner had been detained since 1 February for robbery. It was not his first incarceration, but he is not a particularly dangerous prisoner.
If you have any information please call the police on 17.
