The fire started in a field at Saint Pierre de Rebault, and eventually it jumped the 100m across the Orb river and spread towards the rampe du Moulin in the city centre.

The fire quickly spread to three buildings, including a mattress making workshop.

180 firefighters were at the scene, supported by 35 vehicles, a helicopter and airplanes.

Colonel Eric Flores, commander of the Hérault firefighters, acknowledged a difficult intervention.  “When a fire enters the city, the issues are no longer the same. We must firstly take care of people … It was an impressive fire”

After the evacuation of the inhabitants, led by the police and the sub-prefecture of Béziers, the firefighters protected a dozen houses and the school which were threatened by the flames.

No casualties were reported. The fire was put out by the end of the day.
