Firefighters were battling with a fire on a trawler off Cerbère (Pyrénées-Orientales) on Friday. Four people were on board at the time of the fire.
The trawler was in Spanish territorial waters when the fire broke out. The 27 metre “Barranco” was about 21 km from the coast of Cerbère, and a plume of smoke was visible from the coast. Residents of Banyuls and Port Vendres could see the flames.
French and Spanish help
A Spanish fishing boat, French rescue services from Port-Vendres, and a Dragon 66 helicopter with a diver on board were sent to the scene.
One person died on the boat, and the three others were injured. It wasn’t possible for the fire to be extinguished, so rescue services had to simply wait for the boat to sink.
The fisherman who died, and the injured were transported to the port of La Selva (Spain) aboard another Spanish trawler who had joined the first aid.
