The speed limit was recently lowered from 90 km/h to 80 km/h on departmental roads.
The government announced last month that the decision on whether to keep that speed limit in place will be up to each department.
On Tuesday evening, Christophe Castaner, the Minister of the Interior, said that the reduction of the speed from 90 km/h to 80 km/h has saved 206 lives between 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2019. Despite this, many departments are voting to put the speed limit back to 90 km/h.
So far in Occitanie, the Gard and the Pyrénées-Orientales have definitely decided to keep to the 80 km/h limit; whereas the Hérault, Aude, Aveyron, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne, and Gers will raise it back to 90km/h.
Lozère has not yet decided.
