The government is ramping up the penalties for drivers who are caught using their phone in the next few weeks.
The new law will mean that driving licences can be confiscated temporarily.
Government spokesperson Emmanuel Barbe said “The idea is really to annoy uncooperative drivers…we do not want to deprive anyone of their license for months on end.”
Currently, a driver can be fined €135 with three points off their licence if they are caught using a phone.
We will report more on this as the details emerge.
